چکیده

Stepped spillwayflows are characterised by significant free-surface aeration downstream of the inception point of air entrainment. The stepped design is advantageous for applications which require large energy dissipation and strong flow aeration. While the energy dissipation rate for embankment stepped spillways was studied previously, the optimum design for aeration and air–water mass transfer is not known. Herein new air–water flow experiments were conducted on several stepped spillways with embankment dam slopes using with phase-detection intrusive probes. The present data were compared with previous studies in terms of energy dissipation, flow aeration and air–water mass transfer. The air–water mass transfer was calculated based upon air–water flow measurements in terms of dissolved oxygen. The re-oxygenation rates were comparedwith previous studies comprising both conductivity and direct dissolved oxygen measurements. The comparison highlighted a monotonic increase of aeration efficiency with energy dissipation rate. All data were in good agreement independent of channel slopes, stepped configuration and sensor size. The data confirmed the effects of strong air–water interactions within the bulk of the flow for both energy dissipation and re-oxygenation performances.

Aeration, Flow Instabilities, and Residual Energy on Pooled Stepped Spillways of Embankment Dams

Air-water flow experiments were conducted on some flat and pooled stepped spillways with slopes of 8.9° and 26.6° in transition and skimming flows. The study comprised the observations of the flow patterns, characteristic air-water flow properties, and energy dissipation performances. The air-water flow properties showed some differences in terms of interfacial velocity, bubble count rate, and ...

Flow Resistance and Design Guidelines for Embankment Stepped Chutes

Recently the design flows of many dams have been re-evaluated, resulting in spills often larger than the original ones. In many cases, occurrence of revised flows would result in dam overtopping because of insufficient storage and spillway capacity of reservoirs. Embankment dams whilst common are more likely to fail than other dam types when overtopped in an uncontrolled manner because of breac...

Energy dissipation, flow resistance and gas-liquid interfacial area in skimming flows on moderate-slope stepped spillways

With the re-evaluation and revision of a number of design floods, several embankment overtopping protection systems have been developed and a common technique is the construction of a stepped spillway on the downstream slope. For such moderate slope stepped channels, detailed air–water flow measurements were performed in a large facility with a focus on the rate of energy dissipation, flow resi...

Stepped spillways for embankment dams. Review, progress and development in overflow hydraulics

In recent years a number of embankments were designedwith concrete overtopping protection shaped in a stepped fashion. During large overflows on stepped chutes, there is no skin friction between mainstream and steps, and flow resistance is basically form drag. Alterations of flow recirculation and of fluid exchanges between free-stream and cavity flow are discussed in this study. A comprehensiv...

Simple Design Criterion for Residual Energy on Embankment Dam Stepped Spillways

The stepped spillway design is associated with significant flow resistance and associated energy dissipation on the steps, yielding smaller, more economical downstream dissipation structures. A number of design guidelines were developed for steep stepped spillways typical of concrete gravity dams. The focus of this study is on embankment stepped spillways. A large set of air-water flow data is ...
